Does My Cat Need Cat Dental Care?

You may not realize it, but cat dental exams can be an essential part of his or her health management. Plaque and tartar can build up on your cat’s teeth, just like on your teeth. Regular oral care can reduce the plaque and tartar that may build up and cause gum disease. Gum disease could cause pain and nutritional problems, and it may even be fatal if left untreated.

How We Can Help

We do our best to evaluate your cat's mouth and teeth during their annual visits and if they are developing worsening signs of disease like increased tartar or gingivitis, we may recommend a dental evaluation under anesthesia. Pre-surgical lab is strongly recommended prior to anesthesia and can be done up to a month before the scheduled procedure.

At the time of the dental procedure, your cat will be anesthetized - for the safety of your kitty and the veterinarian. In addition to cleaning your cat’s teeth, the vet can check your cat’s mouth for injuries, tumors, and abscesses. If your cat has gum disease, the veterinarian can determine its extent.

After a cat dental visit, the veterinarian will review how to maintain cat dental hygiene at home. It may also be useful to learn how to brush your cat’s teeth at home. If you begin touching the lips, then gums of your cat's mouth, then introducing the toothbrush, then the dental paste,  you can work up to brushing your cat’s teeth on a regular basis (even 1-2 times a week can make a difference). We can also help you find a proper feline toothbrush or finger brush and dental paste. We can also recommend home care products like water additives and dental diets to help maintain a healthier mouth at home.
